This term, I’ve been teaching kids about symmetry. It’s not easy as I’ve had to practice techniques so that I can relay it to them. “What you do on the left, you do on the right.” I said that line over and over that one day, when I said the first half of it, the children were finishing my sentence!
What I love most is when they start to get it. Even children easily distracted by noises or entertaining seatmates got into creating patterns that mirrored each other on the wings. The feeling is so gratifying for me, but I imagine even more so for the kids who come to class not knowing they will achieve a goal like this!
And the icing on the cake is hearing children chime in their satisfaction.
“I’m really loving this symmetry.” – Lee, 6
“I wish we could do art everyday.” – Rena, almost 7
“Me too.” – Sarah, 10
The term is nearly up. If you live in Auckland and have a child who loves art, check out Art Academy. We’ve got more classes coming up in Term 3 – and more amazing projects for your kids!
