My niece, Erin, 10, has always wanted to be a writer. She’s handwritten her stories in books, and we’ve worked together to bring her tales to life with photos and slide shows when she was six. Most recently, she’s taken her storytelling to a different dimension, using her Sylvanian Family toys as animated characters in mini videos. Last night, she consulted my filmmaker sister Pinky — her tita Pinky — for advice on how to improve her animation techniques. This is the result of perhaps half an hour of work with Tita Pinky. By dessert time, we were able to watch her short film, The Play Date. It could’ve been longer, but it was her little sister Ada’s bedtime so they had to clear the room. But I think it’s brilliant!
I think we can learn a thing or two from Erin. Think outside the box — stories can be told in many ways.
