Popped into the Summit Media office yesterday to visit some former colleagues, and chanced upon the Candy team. A little flashback: I launched Candy magazine in March 1999. I think it took us two months to complete the first issue, powered by loads of inspiration, passion, and late nights fuelled by my 98 Degrees and Rising CD and Nissins ramen from the tindahan nearby. My publisher, Aueeie Mangubat, came up with the name, while I coined the tagline “Meet your new best friend”. My small team was made up of the brilliant Mia Fausto-Cruz, Mikke Gallardo and Becky Kho. Back then, something “cool” was “the bomb”, and terms like “BFF” and “besties” weren’t invented yet. Talk about first love: Candy was my baby. And I am thrilled to say that today, Candy is thriving as the number one teen magazine in the Philippines. Here I am with the new team — bright young stars who were mere kids/teenagers when the magazine first came out (a few of them said they read it when the March-April 1999 maiden issue with Amanda Griffin first came out). What a sweet little homecoming!
